Financial Awareness Day: The Relationship You Are Probably Ignoring

Every August 14th, National Financial Awareness Day rolls around and the internet fills up with the same advice: build a budget, check your credit score, review your savings. Good advice. But if you're a small business owner, there's one piece of your financial life that almost never makes these lists — and it's the one most likely to determine whether your business survives its next rough patch.

Your relationship with your banker.

Most Owners Only Think About Their Bank When They Need Something

I've sat across the desk from small business owners for over 30 years, and here's a pattern I see constantly: the first real conversation happens the moment they need money. A piece of equipment breaks. A big contract requires upfront cash. Payroll gets tight. Suddenly they're calling a bank — often one they've never done business with — trying to explain their whole financial story to a stranger under pressure.

That's the hardest way to get a loan approved. Not because the numbers don't work, but because the banker doesn't know you yet.

Awareness Isn't Just About Your Numbers — It's About Who Knows Your Numbers

Financial awareness usually gets framed as an individual exercise: know your revenue, know your margins, know your debt-to-income ratio. All true. But awareness that stays locked inside your own spreadsheets doesn't help you when a bank is deciding whether to say yes.

The business owners I've watched get approved fastest, and on the best terms, are the ones who treat their banker like part of the team — not a vendor they contact once a year. They:

- Share financials proactively, even in years when the news isn't great

- Call before a problem shows up on a report, not after

- Ask questions about how decisions get made, instead of assuming it's all a black box

- Build a track record a banker can vouch for internally, before they ever need a "yes"

None of that requires a finance degree. It requires treating the relationship as real.

Why This Matters More Than the Interest Rate

Business owners chase the lowest rate the way shoppers chase a sale price. I understand the instinct. But a rate is just one number on one deal. A relationship is what gets you the benefit of the doubt when your numbers dip for a quarter, or the extra effort to structure a request the right way instead of a flat rejection.

A banker who knows your business, your history, and your character is advocating for you in rooms you're not in. A banker who's meeting you for the first time on your loan application is evaluating you on paper alone. Same person, very different outcome — and the difference is entirely about awareness, just not the kind most Financial Awareness Day checklists talk about.

What To Do About It Today

You don't need a loan request to start building this. Today's a fine day to:

1. Reach out to your banker just to check in. Not to ask for anything. Just to update them on how the year's going.

2. Ask what they'd want to see if you were to apply for financing six months from now — before you actually need it.

3. Get clear on how decisions actually get made at your bank, so you're not guessing when the time comes.

Financial awareness isn't only about knowing your own numbers. It's about making sure the people who might one day say yes or no to your business actually know you first.

Want a deeper look at how bankers evaluate loan requests — the real criteria, not the social media version? My book, Approved: How Bankers Actually Decide, breaks down exactly what's happening on the other side of the desk.

HEY, I’M KEVIN…

I spent over 30 years as a commercial banking relationship manager, sitting on the other side of the desk for thousands of business loan decisions. I wrote "APPROVED: HOW BANKERS ACTUALLY DECIDE" to share what actually happens in loan committee -- the details that quietly move a deal from "maybe" to "yes". On this blog, I break down the real reasons loans get approved or denied, so you know what to expect before you ever apply.
